What causes sugar cravings and how to break them -

Sugar cravings are caused by a sharp drop in the body’s blood sugar levels.

The drop is usually caused by eating sugary foods, sweets and snacks which give you an enormous sugar rush followed by a sharp dip.

When the dip occurs, your body’s instant message to the brain is to call for “fuel” and this translates to you as a craving for sugar. The cycle then continues.

Another big cause of low blood sugar in women is menstruation. This type of sugar craving is caused because the body needs more ‘fuel’ than normal to be able to perform its duties at that time. Therefore, blood sugar is used up quicker and needs replacing more frequently. The usual cravings at this time of the month are chocolate, white bread, white rice, pastries and noodles.

How to break the cycle

The only way to break the cycle is to spread out your sugar intake throughout the day. Try and eat complex carbohydrates rather than simple refined sugars. These carbohydrates give you the same sweetness but take longer to breakdown and therefore send your body a gradual supply of sugar rather than one big sugar dump. The effect of these slow release carbs is to keep you going between meals and keep your blood sugar levels constant.

You’ll notice the difference because you’ll have a steady supply of energy all day.
